Marcella Hazan was born in Emilia-Romagna in 1924 and moved to New York after marrying. She began teaching Italian cooking classes from her apartment in the late 1960s.
Her books, including The Classic Italian Cook Book and Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, became standard references for home cooks who wanted to cook Italian food the way it is made in Italy.
Her tomato sauce made with only tomatoes, butter and onion remains one of the most widely shared Italian recipes. She died in 2013.
